Behind the Scenes: Character Design

In the game, the design of the protagonist is particularly important: it is the player stand-in. In the play test, some players said they liked the design of the protagonist and wanted to know more about the idea behind the design of the protagonist.

This behind-the-scenes interview with Katie DeJarlais, character designer for Tears of the Sea. She shared with us the idea of creating the characters.

Q: Can you tell me how you designed them, thanks.

A: As far as how I designed the characters, I essentially researched deep sea creatures and mashed a few different kinds together to make the enemies, throwing potential bioluminescent elements on them. For the protagonist, people had been sharing images of sea angles a lot in the discord so I focused in on making one look more humanoid. The bottom half of the creature turned into a tail when I was asked to use legs. The enemy came from me experimenting with different ideas of a leviathan - we ended up settling on the one that was inspired by crystals I had made since they were so integral to the story and I thought it would be cool to play around with.
